Jonathan Demme's film "Heart of Gold" is quite possibly the most intimate and emotionally moving portrait of any musical performance put to film. History, family, tradition, nature, god, time, death, life, love, and loss. If anyone could present all these ideas in a cohesive manner minus the usual cliche it's Neil Young. Demme's graceful direction compliments the deceptively simple song arrangements. With no unnecessary camera movements, no audience shots, the viewer is left to draw their own emotions out from the music first. The sound recording and mixing for this project is impeccable. Every nuance is perceptible with such subtlety and power that we were engaged to clap and cheer after a couple numbers. The first half of the set is particularly intense. Knowing that Neil managed to escape a near death aneurysm lends weight to his words. Recently, Neil's direct lyrics seemed almost naive. But this gentle descriptive song writing technique cuts right to the heart and soul. So much so that the older classics now seem hidden and shadowed. Sometimes somber, sometimes joyful, "Heart of Gold" should not be missed if in a theatre near you.--r.atkatsh

Welcome back from "the holidays". While back home, I watched the W. Virginia mine story unfold. I forgot how the cable networks take a story and run it into the ground. On the plane, I watched the coverage live. Anderson Cooper from CNN was reporting live from WVA. when he was informed by someone that 12 people had survived. I was amazed that CNN took the info as truth, from a nonofficial without confirmation. I flipped over to FOX to witness Geraldo trolling for emotion, hugging locals, praising the miracle. It all seemed surreal. This morning I woke up to find out that CNN and Fox may have jumped the gun. Sick and pitiful.

Leave it Walt to have the foresight. In the year 2005, the city of Los Angeles will be so dirty and crime ridden that it's residents will fork over $50 a piece to hide safely behind the walls of an amusement park. I always thought Disneyland was quite frankly, gay. As an adult I see it's value. In Disneyland, the streets are clean, there is no graffiti, no homelessness. There is constant stimulation that involves neither alcohol nor drugs. People smile, hold doors open for each other and when a situation warrants strangers say "excuse me" or "i'm sorry". No television sets with CNN or Fox News depressing us. Just sunshine (hey it's still Southern California) in December, colors, sounds, and an oversized mouse hugging kids. Yeah, the product tie-ins are a bit much and the consumerism can't be overlooked. But I can't be that cynical. And if escaping into this unreality for a day makes me feel better then so be it. Besides by the time we got back home and were reminded of Tookie Williams, the war in Iraq, and countless other realities I was ready to turn around and ride space Mountain one more time.

Attended the 26th Annual Swedish Christmas Fair at the Hollywood Palladium. Highlights included the Lucia Pageant pictured here and some excellent meatballs.

With the spirit of Christmas upon us we headed towards the city of Pico Rivera, home to Lyon's Christmas tree farm. Nested beneath enormous powerlines off the 710 freeway, this is one of the surrealist places in the city. The sign says "start a family tradition" but according to the owner, Lyon's tree farm will be no more after this season.

We picked out the cheapest and smallest tree we could find. Lesli thought it was cute and Avery seemed to agree. The farm owner laughed when I presented him with our Charlie Brown tree saying, "I guess someone had to buy it".
Sure it's small but so is our place and looking at the tree right now, I think it's just fine.

My first year in LA I had Thanksgiving with some Witches or Wicans, I think. That wasn't so fun. Next year I was in Vegas at the Excalibur. That was more fun. And last year we threw a potluck of sorts at the infamous "D Street". Fun, fun, fun...

So this year, Lesli and I decided not to cook and eat out.
However, I was amazed at the lack of info. on the net for affordable, fun turkey dinners for us pseudo-boho-30-something-upper/lower class types (ie: people who still dress like they're 19, drive 12 year old foreign cars, and think Arcade Fire is cool). I might regret letting this gem out but I'd want someone to tell me so here goes:

Get drunk enough and u may not notice the food. I ordered some "chicken wings" once and they served me a plate of drumsticks; full size not those buffalo wing style. So this should be interesting...

--Starting his show with a 10 minute video flashback-recreation of his childhood piano lessons.
--Name dropping Sweden's royal family (Sweden has a royal family?).
--Introducing his backup singers as "the vocalettes".
--Playing a song inspired by his trip to The Great Wall of China over a severely dated computer graphic video of The Great Wall of China.
--Reminiscing of the Chinese peoples love of "lock and loll".
--Bringing out guest vocalists that include Sweden's Peter Jorback who apparently stars in the London stage version of The Witches of Eastwick (who knew?) and 2003 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard.
--Performing "Bohemian Rhapsody". For Lesli, this was the most surreal point of the evening. Complete with a lip synced recreation of the original Queen video and choreographed head banging by "the vocalettes" (ala Wayne's World).
--A VIP party with no open bar.

Things I did enjoy beside Ruben:
--Being mistaken for someone at the William Morris Agency.
--Hanging out with Ken ( and his AmEx blackcard with 24hr on call concierge).
--Being introduced (in Swedish) to the band by our apologetic host as the "greatest guitar player in the United States."

Just another bizarre night here in Los Angeles.
